This lesson explores the use of verbs to add dramatic interest to poems. The activities will encourage pupils to think more carefully about the use of verbs to describe action and should enable them to develop their knowledge of verbs and stimulate them to write more descriptive poems. The whiteboard activities will encourage whole class/group discussion, collaboration and participation. The lesson could be used at the beginning of a unit of work on writing poetry or as an extension lesson at the end of work on verbs.

There are 4 parts which look at : Beginnings : What should be included at the start of a legend, setting the scene, looking at words and phrases to describe it. Characters: Looking at the words and phrases to describe an extraordinary character and what features pupils can reproduce for their own character. This lesson uses the story of Branwen, daughter of Llyr, one of the four branches of the Mabinogi, as a basis for teaching comprehension, speech marks and adjectives. It begins with a simplified presentation of the story. The main activity presents drawings of Branwen and Bendigeidfran. Pupils assign adjectives to each character by gender. The plenary requires the correct positioning of speech marks into an extract of the story. There are five supporting worksheets at text and sentence level.

This lesson explores the use of syllables in poetry by investigating haiku and cinquain. The activities allow pupils to learn to count syllables, sort poems into the correct order and identify words with different numbers of syllables. The whiteboard activities will encourage whole class/group discussion, collaboration and participation. The lesson could be used during a unit of work on writing poetry. Use of the whiteboard tools (eg pen, highlighter) would also enable the teacher to address other word-level work associated with nouns/adjectives.

This resource pack revises the use of a thesaurus to choose appropriate synonyms and demonstrates how the choice of words can change the shade of meaning in poetry. Pupils can use the interactive activity to create their own concrete poem using a typical Welsh image as a background to build their poem upon and then print out the completed version. Alternatively the activity could be used for whole class demonstration before printing out backgrounds for the children to write their poem on.

This unit focuses on the opening of a suspense story. The children read the opening then identify the different forms of figurative speech that have been used to add effect. Personification, metaphors and similes are explained and examples shown. Children then go on to write the opening of their own suspense story using a picture of haunted house as stimulus.

Diamante poems are fun and easy to write. Their distinctive structure provides an ideal venue for sentence-level work on nouns, verbs and adjectives. The purpose of the poem is to go from one subject at the top of a diamond shape to another totally different, and sometimes opposite, subject at the bottom. The starting point for this activity is a slide show highlighting the key features of diamante poetry. The writing process is modelled and pupils are asked to identify and classify different parts of speech.
